Olympics triathlon: Alistair Brownlee wins Britain's 19th gold

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Alistair Brownlee secured Great Britain's 19th gold of London 2012 with victory in the triathlon.

Reigning world champion Alistair, 24, won in 1:46:25, 11 seconds ahead of Spain's Javier Gomez, with his brother Jonny, 22, third on 1:46:56.

The victory in the 34-mile swim, bike and run around Hyde Park means Britain's athletes have equalled the Beijing 2008 gold-medal total.

One more gold will represent the best performance at the Games for 104 years.

Later on Tuesday, British cyclists Sir Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Laura Trott are going for three golds, while Britain's dressage team also have high hopes of victory.

Alistair, from Horsforth, West Yorkshire, was one of Britain's biggest hopes for gold after dominating his sport for the last three years.

Both Brownlees came out of the 1500m Serpentine swim in a lead group of five that also included Gomez, with third Briton Stuart Hayes just a few seconds back.

Jonny then made an error by mounting his bike too early and so incurred a 15-second penalty that he had to take during the run.

That group of five built a lead of around 20 seconds after the first bike lap of seven but were then closed down as a large group came together with four laps left.

All the big guns were in that lead pack coming into transition two, meaning the battle for medals would come down to the 10km run.
